When i was growing up I was always the tallest one in my class. I had a larger body frame, and broader shoulders. There is no way I could compete with the short slender girls. I wore baggy clothes, mostly sweatshirts, even in the summer... and I slumped over to hide my "Curves". I hated the way my body looked and it showed! Some days I still struggle with how my body looks. I have a baby belly... from giving birth to two children, I'm still tall, and I still have lots of curves. But I am beautiful because God made me, and I have his Joy written in my heart and on my face.
The Today show did an entire week of segments called "Love your selfie", about body image. Each of the hosts shared something about their body that they felt insecure about. They also all went on national television without makeup on. Its very interesting how each of us feels about our body, how we compare it to an unspoken standard, that is generally similar across the board; all of us has something that is not "Up to the standard". Watching the Hosts of the Today show feel uncomfortable, in their normally very confident skin was honestly a reality check. Each of them are beautiful people and without makeup they are normal! Like me!
The bible talks about how God created people in His image; that means God designed, formed, and crafted humans to look exactly how He wanted them to look. Genesis 1:27 says “So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27, AMP)
The bible says that God created each person individually. “Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13, MSG) That is the best news, because it proves that God cares enough about each individual to create them.
“You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; you know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, the days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.” (Psalm 139:15-16, MSG)
God knows more about how each individual looks, thinks, and feels, because He made them, from nothing into something. God cares more about each person he made than anyone ever could. He sees our hearts, and that is where true beauty stems from. 1 Samuel 16:7b says “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” The worthlessness felt by a woman who cannot reach the image of beauty portrayed by the media can only be healed by replacing the negative image with the positive image that God sees.
