The motto of this blog has been love the Lord your God with all your heart :
LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR PASSION AND PRAYER AND INTELLIGENCE AND ENERGY MARK 12:28
I have been thinking lately, how can I give myself to the Lord every day with this kind of intensity? The bible lays it all out like instructions of how we are to love in 1 Corinthians 13.
So this week I am going to post a little every day about how to love Jesus, so you can allow Him to love you.
Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.
1 Corinthians 13:4
Love endures long and is patient and kind: Endurance means that you stick with it through all the hard things that come along, through pain and suffering, especially despite fatigue and stress. This portion of the verse also describes that through endurance we are patient and kind.... which is funny to me right because I totally stink at being patient. I'm really impatient when it comes to those I love because I expect that they are going to follow through. I can be kind for a little while, until I am running out of patience in enduring the struggles I face... then its all over and my messy heart shows. In the context of my relationship with Jesus, I am certainly no example. I seem to hit circumstance after circumstance that are so downward and negative, and I complain "oh Lord if I could only get my foot healed, then I could..." But its become obvious that Jesus so passionately wants me to turn to Him and say "This situation is yours and for your glory, please use it." and then follow through with the right attitude.
Love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy: Envy is a feeling of being discontent with the things and circumstances in our lives, being covetous of what others have or own. Jealousy is defined as resenting others for their success in life, and being troubled by someone else' actions. This is something I have a hard time conquering. I'm always looking at others relationships with their spouses and with the Lord, and I think... why is it that I have not achieved the level that they are in. Why can't I be as close to God as they are. Jealousy is allowing your heart to sink deeper into the lies of Satan that you will never be good enough to have what someone else has. If loving Jesus is the goal then why get jealous? Jesus never said that there is a bar and if you don't reach that mark on your own then you cannot be loved by me, or love me! NO! That is not how Jesus works. He doesn't have a level you have to reach. You just put all your effort into loving Him with all your might, and in every circumstance, that's how a relationship with Jesus is obvious.
Love is not boastful or vainglorious: Boastful means to be excessively prideful. Vainglory is being really excited about yourself, and showing it off to others. This is something that I don't think I struggle with because I usually don't feel like I achieve much. But the opposite of being boastful or vain is to be humble, and concerned about how others will feel when you rub it in their face that you won and they didn't. Being concerned about the heart of Jesus, and giving Him the glory for the good and victorious things in your life is the right attitude!
Love does not display itself haughtily: Haughty means to show off, to be arrogant, acting superior to others, being self-important, or otherwise thinking that you are better than everyone else. There are certain things that I do think I am better at than others. But there are times that I act like I know way more than other people do when I really don't. I try to impress others with the things that I've learned recently, or read for school. The right attitude would be to stay open to what others have to say on the topic as well! When it comes to loving Jesus, we can set what we know aside, humble ourselves and say "Lord I believe you know infinitely more than I ever could know, and loving you is more important to me than feeling superior to anyone on earth."
*Lord I ask that you would open our hearts to learn how we can love you and love others. I pray that you would magnify the things that we need to learn so our hearts can be purified, and we can love you better. I pray that your word would sink softly into our minds and you would reveal to us ways that we can love you more. We love you Lord Jesus*
